Animations can be created. Protein structures can be analyzed. Several protein structures are included as example. The present enhanced FAT binary version runs native on 68K and PPC machines. Hey all you macheads.. I have been searching (to no avail, so far) for decent paths for upgrading my (already crusty) 9500/120. I know of two (so far) companies that make accelerators, but I'm not looking for an accelerator until I've exhausted the preferred path I'd rather take: upgrading the processor daughtercard. I know that Apple has been and may still be selling the 604/132Mhz card, but for what they were asking for it, I didn't see any point in going with that path, for the 12Mhz worth of punch extra... I have one other problem: conflicting reports of how fast I CAN accelerate my 604/120 system to.. (grammar.. that sentence SCREAMS for better grammar, but you get the drift). I thought that the speed I could accelerate my 9500/120 to was dependent on the bus speed of the machine. So even if I plugged a 604e/200Mhz card in, I might not even be able to use it, because the bus speed of the 9500/120 is incapable of dealing with processor speeds that are that high. I seem to recall seeing a processor card replacement from someone (xlr8?) but if I recall correctly, the price was outrageous, and refunds/payment for used 604/120 cards was at a minimum (99 dollars? that's outrageous... I might as well keep it as a potential fixit piece). So I ask other 9500/120 owners.. what have YOU done, and how have you done it? Can I simply buy a 604 or 604e card at 180Mhz and pop it into my 9500's chassis? Will it work? These are the questions that torment my soul. Help is appreciated, preferably by email, which I will then summarize to the list, provided I get enough info. With 10BaseT, you can connect two hosts only with a special crossover cable that you can make yourself, or buy cheaply (if you can find anyone who knows what it is to sell it to you...). here is the wiring, a diagram I got off the net (I didn't make it). It should make sense that you are swapping the receive and transmit channels. If you don't have a crimper, buy a short straight-through cable, and cut and patch it. (If the individual twisted pairs aren't color coded, you'll need to trace the connections with a meter or something). Bear in mind that network cabling is a bit fussy- you want good connections, so solder if you can. On a Performa 5400/180, with a clean install and just the standard Extensions and CP's, we are experiencing way too many crashes (with ClarisWorks 4.0v5, for instance). Switching back to 7.5.5 seems to cure the problems. Second question: A High-Density disk used by an Apple IIc, when inserted into a 7.5.5 5400 running the ProDos II extension, causes the computer to hang. Is it possible that this HD disk has been formatted as 720k by the Apple II, and is thus unrecognized by the OS, or is it something else? Best regards, Mark E. Huang wrote that Deneba's Canvas 5.01 seems to stop ClarisDraw from opening it's own files, even when Canvas is not running. The most likely thing I can think of is that either the Desktop File is corrupted, or Canvas has a type/creator conflict with ClarisDraw. The symptoms would be that double-clicking on a ClarisDraw file would attempt to load it into the wrong application, or not load it at all. I'm not sure, but I think this is what Henry was describing. If this is the problem, the solution is to trash Canvas, and then rebuild the Desktop file by holding down command-alt while restarting until the message appears asking whether you really want to rebuild the Desktop file. So, if you open the root hard disk window [double-click on the HD icon], view that window by icon, and add up the "### in disk" and "### available" numbers, they total 260Mb? If in fact that's what's happening, then apparently the disk has been partitioned such that half the disk is unavailable. It's extremely unlikely that such a thing happened spontaneously. You could check this with your HD formatting software. The more common symptom would be that the Finder reports, for example: 400Mb in disk 100Mb available ...but when you add up the sizes of all the folders on the disk, you only come up with 260Mb. >What's happened to the remainder? One possiblity is that the machine crashed while a big file was being written to the disk, so that a large amount of space is marked as used, but isn't associated with a file, so your visible folders don't reflect it. Running Disk First Aid will correct this. MacTools should have, as well. Given that it didn't, this cause is unlikely. It also seems unlikely that you were in the process of writing a 250Mb file at the time, though you may have been :). The other, more likely, possiblity is that there are big files or folders sitting out on the desktop or otherwise hidden from immediately apparent view. For example, my System Folder is 163Mb. If I move it out to the desktop, the disk usage stats at the top of the window are unchanged, but if I add up all the folder sizes shown in the window, I'll be 163Mb off, so if I forget there's that giant folder out on the desktop, I might get confused. chazl 02.04.97 ------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 12:22:14 -0500 From: Chaz Larson Subject: Macintosh Easy Open At 5:19 PM +0100 2/3/97, Dewey Markham, Jr. wrote: >Can anyone give me a compelling reason to keep [Macintosh Easy Open]? Seriously, if you often transfer files over from Wintel machines, it can be useful. lf you double-click on a file you don't have the application for, it will throw up a dialog listing all the applications you have that can deal with the file, along with information as to how the app will deal with it. One drawback is if you do this while you have a large, slow fileserver volume mounted, MEO will go search that large, slow volume for possible candidates before putting up its dialog. Yuck. If you don't deal with unknown files, or know what apps you want to open things with, you've really got no need for it. For example, if you bring over lots of *.xls files from your PC, you probably know that you're going to open them with Excel, and so can just drag them onto an alias of Excel. chazl 02.04.97 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 12:14:58 -0600 From: Graeme Forbes Subject: MMX again For another Pentium Pro/MMX vs. PowerPC comparison, David Ramsey suggests taking a look at In this one a 200MHz PentiumMMX loses substantially in Photoshop tests to both a 200MHz 603e and a 150MHz 604e. Andrew ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 15:19:40 +0900 From: Derek Phillips I'm having troubles launching Adobe Acrobat Reader. When I try to launch the application or double click a PDF document, the program launches, I get the splash screen, a full menu bar, the cursor turns into a clock and at 9:00 (on the cursor clock) the program crashes. There is no cursor activity and Command-Option-Escape doesn't function so I am forced to Restart. A variation of the above situation is when I reach the fateful 9:00, the cursor moves beyond the 9:00 crash point, but then very soon I get a System Error message type 10 (line 1111 trap error) and of course I have to restart again. This situation has occurred exactly the same way for over a year on my machine, with many different extension and control panel configurations (ie. on and off and various combinations) and many different software sources (downloading from the internet, from CD's etc.). This situation involves both Reader 2.0 and 2.1. Unfortuately I need this Reader to open a scripting manual for OneClick, but I haven't been able to find a way to get assistance from Adobe. As this is my first time posting, I'm not sure exactly what information I can give you to help you understand the reason for my trouble, but here goes. My machine is an LC 520 (68030 - 25 mhz - no FPU) with 20 mb of installed ram (I have RamDoubler), and a 1.2 gb APS hard drive. I have an English system 7.5.3 (system 7.5 with update 2.0). Quick Draw GX is not installed and I have 55 fonts installed - no postscript. If this is important, I have Kanji Talk system 7.1 installed on my internal hard drive but it doesn't mount when I run from my external drive. I have Japanese Language Kit 1.1 installed but the extensions were disabled when I had my problems. I allotted 5 mb of memory to the Acrobat Reader application and the Font database has 35k. If any of you helpful people out there can offer me some help I'd be grateful as I'm beginning to get a bit frustrated :-).
