My 14-year-old daughter gets an allowance that is supposed to cover various specified categories of expense. I have tried to make a spreadsheet into which she could put her income each week, and then distribute it into categories of budget that would keep growing as long as she didn't spend anything out of a given category. Then when she wants to buy, say, clothes, she looks at the bottom line, sees how much she has saved in her budgeting for that category, and knows how much she can spend. She spends it, then notes how much she spent in that category, and the bottom line of that category decrements by that much. All the while there is a Total line that shows the total money she should have on hand. I hope that is clear. I want her to save in categories and spend in categories, and know how much remains in each category because she somehow notes her expenses as coming out of one category or another. Does anyone know of an existing program that does pretty much just that? If I were cleverer with FileMaker, I have a feeling it would be a good way to do it, but I don't know it that well. To use it on a USB Mac, you just purchase a converter from them (I'd also assume other third party adapters would work, but who knows). 3Com's web site has lots of good information on it about using Palm Pilots with Macs. Lets hope they create the appropriate >software for mac users soon. Hell, maybe it already exists. Anyone? Heh. You can ignore the "for PCs only" where USB is concerned--and that goes for ANY USB device. USB is a cross platform standard and anything that comes out for USB on PCs will have no trouble being "seen" by iMacs and b/w G3s. AFAIA, USB devices need NO driver, which is one of the advantages for Apple switching to this kind of interface. I am, myself, still in the serial port and SCSI world where my own Macs are concerned, but the whole point of Apple moving to this new standard means that the newer Macs can share all kinds of USB devices that were formerly for PCs only--including mice, keyboards, external disc drives, printers, you name it. In addition to the product you mention, there is already a serial-to-USB converter attachment available for people who purchased the older Palm serial cradle or cable and have a USB capable Mac. Here's my theory and I'm pretty sure it is correct, but I will Marlon, I haven't read the thread up to this point, but if you are hearing a ~2sec high-pitched tone from your PowerBook it is probably your hard drive. I have noticed this with IBM OEM 2.5" drives - first in my PowerBook 1400, then later in several PCs I've had through my hands. Under some circumstances, they go into some kind of recal process which [I guess] whisks the heads back and forth across a short travel at maximum acceleration, generating the "beep" noise. I noticed this at first when ejecting PCMCIA cards from my 1400; sometimes the shock of the card ejecting would trigger this phenomenon. Also when I was writing some very annoying code on my PowerBook, and I would thump the table in frustration, it would sometimes make that "meeeeeep!" noise to remind me of the hard disk's mortality :-) Also remember that the 5300 (and the 1400, for that matter) have PIO disk access, so if part of the snd resource needs to be demand-loaded, and there is other activity going on, the request may not be serviced immediately. -- Lewin A.R.W. I have a PowerComputing PowerWave system that seems to have trouble with dealing with CD-ROM drives. I assumed the internal drive had died, so bought an external which worked fine for a few weeks. Greetings! I have a friend who is an endodontist and he is looking to upgrade his current computer system. He is currently running an ancient DOS system/software. I asked him if he had considered going with the Mac OS and he said he couldn't because there is no software available. I know this isn't true and have found one program, DentalMac, that looks good. What I am hoping is that some of you may be able to provide reviews of this program or suggestions for some other Mac software for running his office. He currently has one partner and they have two office locations. They want to be able to do everything by computer, perhaps including their treatment notes at some point. They will need to be able to network at least 3 computers at one office and have the capability of linking the two offices together. I appreciate your assistance. I would really like to be able to save him from going to Windows--he has no idea what he'd be getting into. I would suggest using the estension manager and creating a new extension set with half of your extensions active - half disabled. Reboot and see what happens. If the problem exists, its one of the active extensions. If not it one of the disabled ones. Take half of the next group etc until you find the one that is causing the problem. Once you find it, you may be able to find a configuration item that will prevent it. -- Doug >I've got an 8500 upgraded to NewerTech G3 running OS 8.5.1. This morning I opened the IO-MUG digest and then the Info-Mac digests that came in over night (night of 20 April). I found that in the lower left corner of the digest message where the digest mailbox icon usually sits, there was a black movie player window with a control bar at the bottom, like a QuickTime movie player window. Weirdly, the digest was slowly scrolling by, frame by frame, showing me the text of the digest, one tiny frame at a time. Yesterday I installed QuickTime 4. It works fine except that the MoviePlayer portion of it crashes with a Type 1 error with my regular (criminally huge) extension set, though it works fine with 8.5.1 set. That's the only significant change I'm aware of. But suddenly I get a movie instead of a digest!? Then inside the IO- MUG digest I saw a post from the MacTuner people. Could these little windows have something to do with MacTuner? Anyway, did anyone else get a movie window instead of a digest icon in recent days? ??!!?? Daly >Hey all.
