Bottom line: it works. No compatibility problems (so far!), and things run faster. However, video-intensive tasks may not improve since the upgrade did not change video speed at all according to "System Info 3.1" by Norton Utilities. Disk access was slightly faster, and the CPU and FPU functions were 4x and 10x faster. I did not try other benchmark utilities. I am also including comments I got from some other 5xx users who have upgraded. Jerry Spangrude (DrBlood@medschool.med.utah.edu) <<<<<< Attached TEXT file named "5xx->PPC Upgrade" follows >>>>>> Subject: Upgrading a PowerBook 5xx to PowerPC Submitted by: Jerry Spangrude 2/19/96 (DrBlood@medschool.med.utah.edu) Here are the comments I got on PowerBook 5xx upgrades. One person cites a problem with his hard drive after the upgrade. I have not checked the latest digests so I don't know if this has been addressed any further. You might check directly with him. I wonder if this problem is due to not updating his drivers, as that has been emphasized in all the material I've seen as an important thing to do after the upgrade. He says he initialized his disk again, but I'm not sure if that necessarily will add the proper drivers back. I guess it would depend on the software you used to reinitialize. After the upgrade you need to use the new "Drive Setup" utility to get the new drivers, not the old "Apple HD SC Setup" utility. Other than this problem, all other responses were positive. My experience: I got the NUpowr 167MHz board with 8 megs of RAM. I had been advised by the tech rep to remove my GV internal modem since the supplied software (version 2.08) would not work with the new board. I bought an external 33.6 MHz modem to replace the internal 14.4 so I was planning to take the old one out. But when I got into the PowerBook (using the tools supplied by Newer Technologies with the upgrade) I found I could not get the modem board loose. This is partly because it was a snug fit in the socket, and partly because there is really nowhere to grab the card to pull it out; you have to pry it with a tool. I did not want to break it, so I decided to leave it in. The upgrade card went in nicely and I added back my memory expansion board and reassembled. Software & Hardware Tracker (Info-Mac directory and reference "app/software-hardware-tracker.hqx") is a FileMaker Pro 3.0 relational database which will help you collect, store and organize useful information (such as registration codes, serial numbers, product notes, useful adresses as well as phone/fax numbers and URLs for software authors, companies and distributors, etc.) about all your computer products (hardware, software and freeware/shareware). Even better, you can launch URLs directly from inside the database, which will then call upon the Internet Config system to open them with the proper helper applications. To provide all the features and flexibility needed by international users, Software & Hardware Tracker distinguishes between the author or authors of a program, the company that makes it and the one that distributes it. Moreover, Software & Hardware Tracker differentiates between hardware products, commercial software products and freeware/shareware programs since different kinds of information are needed when dealing with each category of items. For instance, a commercial software package usually comes with a serial number that works no matter what user name you use. But a shareware program will come with a registration code based on personnal info, such as your name and address. Software & Hardware Tracker takes those differences and subtleties into account. Software & Hardware Tracker is shareware and costs $10 (though you can also use it as freeware: see the enclosed documentation for conditions and limitations). Registrations are handled by Kagi Shareware. Thanks for supporting shareware! (Software & Hardware Tracker may be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM. It has been checked with SAM 4.5) David-Artur Daix [Archived as /info-mac/app/software-hdware-tracker-111.hqx; 636K] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 11:25:36 -0700 From: betchin@lynx.dac.neu.edu Subject: [*] Sticks11.sit It is the updated archive of Aaron Sticks Patch archive that is circulated currently on the network. Where's the Waste? provides a complete list of all folders, showing for each folder exactly how much space it consumes on your harddisk, and how much it actually uses. It's purpose is to allow you to locate folders that have a really high loss. Compression of those folders would gain you a lot of disk space. Where's the Waste? uses Drag and Drop for easy interfacing with other applications. It's user interface is similar to "Find File", and is immediately familiar. Its a wonderful machine and everything is working great. However, I have some questions concerning capturing images: 1. When I capture an image from my camcorder (connected via S-VHS), it seems to be at a fixed resolution of (320 by 240?). I can't find an option in the program (Apple Video Player) to capture at better resolutions. Note that I'm only capturing stills, not motion video. 2. Is this a hardware limitation (built in video capture) or software (Apple Video Player) limitation? Or could this be a limitation from the NTSC format from the Camcorder? 3. If this is a software limitation, is there software out there that will allow me to capture stills at better resolutions? Commerical or Shareware (prefered) suggestions are welcome. 4. If this is a hardware limitation, can someone recommend/compare video cards out there? I know of a card called ATI Xclaim VR, but does this solve my resolution problem? What about other video cards out there? Is there a site comparing video cards for the mac in terms of price/performance/features? 5. Lastly, I understand that to maximize video captures with a stock 8500, I should upgrade to 4 megabytes of VRAM (currently at stock 2 megs) and install a fast second hard drive that "doesn't have a system on it"? But the hardware still limits me to only achieve 25 fps? Can someone please clearify me on this matter? I connected the printer up using a serial lead to the printer port - it prints fine! The problem is that, for some reason, it seems to be taking over the CPU usage (rather like processor cycling on a powerbook) every second or so. This is most obvious when I use a program which rotates molecules - it will rotate smoothly, then stop for half a second, then start again etc. It also does the same to the screensaver, and to the 'eyes' in the menubar. It is not generally noticeable in the Finder, except for some occasional, but annoying, short pauses when you try and do things like selecting with a click or start to drag or click on a menu etc.. If I open up a control panel, the problem disappears. It also does not happen during menu usage or during dragging (i.e. when the mouse is down). The effect only seems to occur with the serial port driver - if I switch to Appletalk, and connect up the printer using Phonenet connectors, I do not get this problem. I've tried without anything extra in the extensions or control panels or system folders (except the driver), rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM... to no avail! I am using HP Deskwriter Series 6.0 drivers on a Duo 230 with 7.5.1. Tonight, I plan to try using the modem port (I have a modem plugged in at the moment, and it means serious furniture moving to get at the back of the dock), as well as trying the port on the powerbook when out of the dock (which I just thought of as I was writing this), so I'll keep you posted... Anyone out there have any ideas what the problem is, or other suggestions to try out? ====================================== Adrian Umpleby adrian@ic.ac.uk http://wrench.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/ ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 10:22:10 -0600 (CST) From: "Anthony F. "I really don't like having to check the dictionary for every other word I put into a text file". So I thought I'd come and ask the experts (that's you, in case you're lost). Is there a stand-alone spell-checker for the mac as shareware/freeware? I'm just looking for something that is searchable with a fairly descent interface. I don't care about deffinitions, but in spite of all my writing I still don't seem to be very good at spelling out some words regardless of how frequently I study. I realize something simple could be made with a hypercard stack, but I'm not interrested in wasting my time, typing in every single word in a dictionary just so I can have a simple ref-card for accuracy. Any hints? Please reply directly.
