Shareware ($30 for an individual license). This FAT version runs in native mode on both PowerPCs and 680x0 Macs. (Also available in PowerPC and 68K versions). Includes the Bertie font, a brief manual ("Read Me"), a license agreement, a program to facilitate the registration process ("Register"), Register's help file ("Register.txt"), and a folder of example problems. Bertrand is both an educational aid for students of logic and a practical tool for philosophers, logicians, computer programmers and mathematicians. Using an algorithm inspired by the "consistency tree" method found in Leblanc and Wisdom's textbook "Deductive Logic", Bertrand proceeds by decomposition and instantiation to solve first-order predicate logic statements for satisfiability, validity, equivalence, "logical truth" and "logical falsity." Subject-equality is supported. The program also produces truth-tables for truth-functional sentences. During the solution process, Bertrand issues "status reports", giving the user insight into the method by which Bertrand constructs its tree. These status reports can be stepped through one at a time, or they can be turned off entirely to speed up the solution process. Once Bertrand has solved a given problem, the tree constructed in the process is displayed in a scrolling window. A summary of results is given in a separate window. If applicable, a model in the form of a truth-value assignment to atomic statements is provided. Tree, Truth Table, and Premise files can be saved or printed, once the program has been registered. System requirements: a minimum 1 meg of free RAM is recommended, as is System 7.1 or higher. herzberg@humnet.ucla.edu [Archived as /info-mac/edu/bertrand-10.hqx; 434K] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 09:03:59 -0800 From: boris@sally.str.archi.tohoku.ac.jp (Boris Weliachew) Subject: [*] Boris's Patch 2.5.3x for Aaron 1.5.3 Hello, This is the new 2.5.3x upgrade of the famous "Boris's Patch" for Aaron extension, which has its first realise almost two years ago... Improved Robustness This version is primarily a bug fix release. We have stress tested the server very hard and it should be much more reliable under high load conditions. In a 100 hour period of hammering on an LC630 (68040 running System 7.5.5 and Open Transport 1.1.1) it handled on average per hour over 1000 FTP connections, over 1200 HTTP connections, over and over 370 Megabytes of transferred data. It was running with the default memory partition and refused an average of 68 connections per hour because of memory restrictions. Particular bug fixes include problems with PASV mode, problems downloading some MacBinary files, -32 and -302 errors, problems with CGIs and parameters containing %XX encoded data. Improved HTTP Support Also in this version we have rounded out the CGI support, adding support for: * CGI authentication. * the full request and pragma CGI parameters. * the host CGI parameter which allows a form of multihoming. * Server Side Includes (SSI), counters and include files, file modification date and so forth. * Longer AppleEvent timeouts. We've also added support for missing files (missing.html, missing. acgi, etc) which will be returned if the file is missing. This allows you to have a customised response for outdated links, as well as allowing you to use CGIs to report or redirect references to moved files or to fake out an entire directory hierarchy using a single CGI. And we now support the If-Modified-Since field for improved performance with caching proxy servers. Then you know that it's important to keep the registration serial number of your software around so you can identify that you're the legitimate owner of the programs you've purchased. But if you're like me, you have your registration information written on scraps of paper or kept in manuals and boxes you've scattered somewhere. And when it's time to upgrade to new versions, you cringe at the thought of entering a twenty-character code for your commercial or shareware apps. (You DO register and pay for your shareware, don't you?) The solution: use Regis to maintain your serial numbers! Regis is a FAT application, meaning it needs to exercise more and eat less. Additionally, it can run native on both 68K and PowerPC ISAs. It has been tested on a 7100/80 and a Quadra 630. Feel free to include Regis on the archive's CD-ROM collection. Version 2.0 includes many new features, including tournaments, specially-designed puzzle levels, and individual player statistics records. A brief description follows; for more information, go to: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~dob/snood.html Snood is a fun puzzle game for Macintosh that will test your intellect rather than your reflexes. Your goal is to free all of the trapped Snoods by launching other Snoods at them. If you connect three or more Snoods, they will transport away. If that leaves any Snoods not connected to the top of the playfield, they will fall to safety. Don't take too long, though. Every Snood you launch increases the Danger Level. When the gauge fills up, the Snoods will shift downward. If the Snoods reach you, the game is over. SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARENTS: Snood is a good game for children as well as adults. The game is non-violent and non-confrontational, and children can play at their own pace. It develops several basic skills, including matching, calculation of angles, and simple strategic assessment and problem solving. It does not require reading, and the controls are very simple. The Child difficulty level is easy enough even for young children. Minimum requirements: * Mac with 68030 or newer processor (68040 or PPC recommended) * System 7 (System 6.0.7 reportedly works, too) * Screen size of 640x480 pixels or larger * 256 or more color monitor Dave Dobson (dob@umich.edu) WWW: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~dob [Archived as /info-mac/game/snood-20.hqx; 772K] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 19:46:17 -0700 From: rick@kagi.com Subject: [*] SolitaireTillDawn3.0.sit.hqx Solitaire Till Dawn is the premiere card game collection for the Macintosh. Version 3.0 contains 30 different games, including favorites such as Klondike, Golf, Pyramid, Canfield, Forty Thieves, and Spider, along with other more exotic games and even a few created expressly for Solitaire Till Dawn itself. This release offers four new games, beautiful professional graphics including many different window backgrounds and card designs, and the new Card Shark Options for intelligent game play: "smart cards" that zoom to their destinations with a single click, early win notification, Am-I-Stuck, and more. It also contains these features from earlier versions: unlimited undo and redo of moves, the status bar that shows your progress and statistics at a glance, "Magnetic Mouse" option for playing without typing or clicking (great for RSI relief!), and sound effects. Why don't you try it on your Mac? If your Mac has microphone or CD-input or something like that, You can see it with SoundVision. SoundVision is probably the fastest sound analyzer for Mac. SoundVision shows waveform and spectrum of sound at REAL TIME on most of Macs. You don't need fast Macs like AV series to do real time analysis, only you need is a Mac IIsi (normal one, 68030 20MHz). Have a try. It's fun! SoundVision requires a Mac with 68030, 68LC040, 68040 or PowerPC for the CPU. SoundVision is a FREEWARE. Version 1.0.1 TykeWriter is a word processing program for children who are learning to read and write. It is trivial to children to learn and use. As the child's skills develop, the teacher or parent can add new features by changing the level setting for that child. TykeWriter can be used without the keyboard, using only the mouse and on-screen alphabet. TykeWriter should work with all desktop Macintosh running any version of System 7. To install, download the file "TykeWriter 1.0.1.sea" and double click on that file. A dialog box will ask you to pick a location for storing the program. Once the location has been selected, press the "Extract" button and a folder will be created. This folder contains a readme file with further instructions.
