I've been trying to rewrite the PPP reconnect script that comes with OT/PPP, and am running into a bit of proble. What I'm trying to do is have the script first check if the connection is idle. If it is, I want it to check to see if a specific process is running (Eudora Internet Mail Server) and if it is, quit it. Then, connect to the server and restart the server. The reason for doing this is because EIMS doesn't like it when the ISP I'm with recycles the line, every six hours. Normally this wouldn't cause a problem; it would simply cause OT/PPP to restart the connection. However, it seems to run into a problem when the line disappears before the six hours (Say, ISP restarts or loses the portserver I'm connected thru) and/or the connection is dropped during the redial or ISP doesn't answer (For some reason, OT/PPP won't redial if it the connection was opened when TCP/.IP was called). The server reports that the stream for each part of the connection (SMTP, POP, PORT106[what is that?], and something else) is invalid, and halts. THe only restart is to quit and reopen. What I'm looking for is to make the script compare a returned line from a command for a certain string, the Application name. (tell application "finder" to get name of processes) I've found that this line: tell application "Finder" to get name of process "Eudora Internet Mail Server" will return a string if the process is running and an error if it's not... I could try to get that implemented but there's got to be a cleaner way to do this... any suggestions? (System 7.6.1, 'Power' Macintosh IIci with Daystar PPC Card) Thanks. If you have a machine capable of running it, Apple's Quickdraw GX has an Imagewriter driver which does background printing. I, too, have an old Imagewriter that I bought with my 512k Mac way back when, and GX background printing works perfectly with it using both my Powerbook 165 and my Performa 6400. It's the main reason I run GX on both machines. }TIA }John Fitzgerrel --- Paul J. Many thanks to those who suggested the use of Tech Tool as a workaround. This works well and has been added to my toolkit. Having delved deeper, though, and reformatted the (Apple) drive using system 7.5.3 version of Drive setup, I find that the problem does not reappear until the system 7.5.5 update is installed. This has been verified by twice following the same procedure of reformatting the drive, installing 7.5.3, restarting and rebuilding twice (to eliminate Mac Easy Open inspired rebuilds), installing 7.5.5 and restarting. At which point the rebuild key options do not work. Weird, and not a problem on any other machine in my care. Any thoughts on this would be welcome. I work at a print shop, and our Power Computing Power 100 (40 MB RAM/1 gig HD/System 7.6.1) has about 700 fonts by my estimation, of which perhaps 200-300 are currently in use. The ones I use are stored in the Fonts folder, inside the System folder, with the bitmap and TrueType versions organized in suitcases by type (serif, sans, dingbat, etc.). The ones I haven't used yet are in a separate folder, outside the System folder, and are similarly organized in suitcases. I also have still more fonts in folders I haven't had time to sort through. When I need to add a font for a particular job, I have to quit all applications, drag the font between suitcases, then re-launch the application(s) I need. Fortunately, this doesn't happen often. When I was running System 7.5.3, I tried Suitcase 3.0, but it informed me that all of my suitcases contained Chicago, which they didn't, and I had some other problems I can't recall, so I de-installed it. I am currently running no other font management utilities. I would like to be able to easily organize my fonts by type, view their appearance in the font menu (as with Now WYSIWYG Menus, version 6.7 of which deactivated itself when I upgraded to System 7.6.1, so I'm using an earlier version of WYSIWYG Menus for the time being), and add and remove fonts on the fly without closing applications. I would, ideally, like to have all of my fonts available at any time, organized in hierarchical menus by type, without bogging down those applications that steadfastly insist on examining each installed font every time the application is launched. Word 5.1a takes long enough to boot now that I usually leave my desk and go do something else while I wait. Now WYSIWYG Menus allows you to rename and thus re-organize your fonts, but it is dreadfully awkward at it (one font at a time, and much mouse-clicking is required). I'd like to shift-click a few dozen font names, drag them to a window or word that says "Serif," and have a "Serif" submenu appear in all my Font menus. In other words, I'd like to organize my fonts in precisely the same way I organize my files: nested hierarchical menus. Is such a thing possible? It would also be very cool if I could define an entire font category (specifically, Dingbats) to always display its contents' names in plaintext rather than in their own character sets. Oh, and one quick related question: in System 7.6.1, which STR# resource contains the phrase "How razorback-jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts"? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 20:47:36 -0500 From: "steven l. cantor" Subject: Power Mac DebugServices a quick and hopefully simple query: while recently compacting my hard drive with norton utilities, my copy of this program (Power Mac DebugServices v2.0b12) got hosed. what function does this program perform? is it necessary to have on-board with 7.5.5? where can i download the most recent version? thanks in advance. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jul 1997 13:10:39 +0000 From: Pavel Bondarovski Subject: TransCryptor (Cyr) 2.0 Dear Sirs, Thank you for including the information on my TransCryptor (Info-Mac Digest; Sat, 28 Jun 97; Volume 15 : Issue 128). I have to admit the cause was simple - a disabled Anubis 2.54 hard drive extension. I was very chastened by this as I had just methodically tested the RAM in various permutations in order establish which, if any, were faulty. This was tricky as the RAM in the 8100 is installed in pairs! Who or how this critical extension was disabled is a matter of internal debate :-) Trevor Harris, Lampeter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 20:47:06 -0500 From: DEE76020@aol.com Subject: VGA to Mac Problem Toshiba Letter Dear Sirs: I purchased a Toshiba Multimedia Monitor, model # MM20E45, last week.
