It worked just wonderfully on my G3/233/96 under 8.5 until a few days ago, when almost every time I used the *Open link in new window* option resulted in an error-2 disappearance. Moreover, IE wouldn't release the chache.waf file. It couldn't be trashed, and even a restart was impossible, since a dialogue informed me that a file was open and couldn't be deleted. Only a 3-finger salute would help. I disabled FolderPop - no change. I did a clean reinstall of ALL my MS software, including Office 98, just in case one of the myriad MA extensions and libraries might be missing - no change. Then I consulted Conflict Catcher 8.03, which listed Contextual Menus Extension and SOMobjects as the likely culprits. Your particular version of the Mac OS was stuck bridging the gap between MacTCP (now called 'classic' networking) and the new Open Transport networking. To accomplish this feat, a master switch was thrown in (some say well hidden, but...) this control panel is called the Network control panel. Which is kinda funny since on my PowerBook it came pre-installed not in the control panels folder but in the Apple Extras folder. Anyway, if you have this file on your machine, open it and choose. I'm using a Power Mac 7500, OS 8.1, PPP version 1.0.1, Modem version 1.0.1 and OT/PPP version 1.0.1 with a GlobalVillage Teleport Platinum modem. The modem script is the most recently released one posted by the manufacturer. It may be significant that I live in a semirural area and my telephone company is not the same as that of my ISP, but it is still a "local" call and has not changed in the past few months. I had been logging onto my ISP access with a speed of 33,000 bps and my download speed ran between 1500 and 2500 bytes per sec. Then, a few weeks ago, the service provider switched to a 56 K access number and discontinued the older one. I purchased a faster modem, but it would not access above 26,400 bps. I then returned to my previous modem; the only change from earlier was the access number. I now log on at 26,400 and my downloads with both Netscape, Fetch and Transit rarely exceed 1000 bytes per second (even at 3 A.M. and 6 A.M., times which in the past were not busy. Most of the time they range from 450 to 700 bytes per second. The provider doesn't have an answer and blames the telephone company; the telephone company states that they will only guarantee a 9600 bps connection (although there has been no change in their service between the time of updates) and the modem manufacturer tells me to read the manual.
