Pretty Scroll - animates scrolling so you can follow the window & find
last point easily
Pretty Scroll is a control panel that animates scrolling. When scrolling
through a document, it is sometimes hard to find the last
point you viewed, especially if it was located near the end of the
document. Pretty Scroll makes it easier. Because the scrolling
process is animated, you can follow the movement and find the last
point easily.
What's new in 2.0?
- Changed user interface -- Appearance Manager (Mac OS 8) savvy.
- Added new feature -- Exclude Applications.
- Changed scrolling algorithm -- Only visible part of the window is
animated, and animation of scrolling is smoother.

Subject: (Q) Card for a second monitor
Now I have a G3, I hope to put into practise some of the intriguing
possibilities of working with two monitors that Adam C. Engst outlined in
TidBITS a few months back. I have an A4 Apple greyscale monitor as my main
screen, and I now want to buy a card for the G3 that will power an old, but
crisp 13 inch Apple Trinitron (Macintosh II era!) as number two monitor.
However, a salesperson at one of the UK's leading mail order companies now
tells me that none of the cards available new today will drive anything
less than a 15 inch monitor.
Is this correct? Or can I buy a low price card (I was looking at the Formac
ProMedia cards) that will handle my 13 incher to give me dual monitors. I
don't want to give up the superb sharpness and readability of the A4
greyscale, but switching plugs when I want to user Painter etc will become
a chore - or worse, discourage use.
Advice, exortations and recommendations welcomed. If direct to me, I will
summarise for the list.

Subject: (Q) Font organization utils?
Hi Folks. I'm looking for a utility that will help me organize my
font menus. I don't know if one (or more) exists, but I'd appreciate
any feedback.
What I'd like is the following:
- The ability to allow me to organize my fonts into categories (submenus).
i.e. "Script", "Sans", "Block", etc.
- When font menus are displayed, each font name is displayed in its
own typeface.
Ideally, *all* apps would be affected...
If either or both features exist, please let me know. If it makes
no sense, or I'm crazy for asking, let me know that, too :).
Thanks for any leads!

Mike,
I don't have any experience with Quickbooks, it sounds like a corruption
problem. Have you:
1) Checked your disk drive with Disk First Aid, TechToolPro, or Norton
2) Checked for Virus infections
3) Reinstalled Quickbooks
4) Installed any extensions or software coincident with this problem
5) Tried a backup of the file?

This raises a more general question. Will the software vendor exchange a
damaged master disk for a good one? Since what you buy is not the program,
but a licence to use one copy of the program, it would seem that they OUGHT
to provide this service. Does anyone know what are the practices of the
various major software vendors?

This sounds to me like a bad SCSI cable or bad termination. Try another
cable and, if you're not already, maybe an active terminator - one of those
smart ones that adjusts itsaelf and such.

CDFinder 2.1.1
CDFinder catalogs CD-ROMs, ZIPs, floppies, SyQuests, and everything else
that turns (even your file server..) and allows you to search for
anything in those catalog files.
It is very fast, supports drag&drop, is PowerPC native (but also fast on
any other Mac with at least a 68020 CPU), and is multi-lingual...
CDFinder is shareware (15 US$ for a single user license,
multi-user licenses are available).

Ken,
I've used Iomega's FindIt application that comes (free) with the Iomega
Zip/Jaz Tools & Drivers software package, that can be downloaded at
http://www.iomega.com/support/software/mac.html
Preferences can be set to catalog only certain SCSI devices, or all,
including your boot volume. Quite useful for automatic and up-to-date
index keeping. Also allows quick searching for titles or pattern
matching. Hope this helps.

I recently digitized Sgt. Pepper from vinyl to CD-R (Yes, I know it's
available at my local record store on CD, but it was the challenge that
prompted me). I digitized each track from the LP using SoundEdit 16 Pro,
saving to hard drive in AIFF format. I went from the phono to the Mac (G3
with A/V ports) through an amplifier, although an inexpensive stereo
pre-amp would do just as well. I used the phono input to the amp and the
output from the tape monitor. I burned the CD with Toast. With SoundEdit
16, I was even able to eliminate some of the LP "pops," but I gotta say,
that's a pretty tedious thing to do. It may be my imagination, but I'm
convinced that the sound quality from the LP to CD is better than going
from CD to CD.

To use Appletalk over Ethernet (Ethertalk) instead of Localtalk, all you
need is a crossover cable. That' an ethernet cable with the transmit and
recieve wires crossed so no hub is required.

Subject: Help with CD graphics
I have recently purchased a CD burner and I am considering how to go
about archiving and cataloging photos.
The archive will be for general usage - no high end graphic use that
requires drum scans and huge files.
Some of my specific questions are:
right,left,out1. what is the best format to
scan the photos (GIF, TIFF, PICT, Photoshop) I guess this is a tradeoff
between file size and scan quality.
2. what would the best scanning resolution be - again I assume that a
setting of around 100dpi would produce adequate results but it is a
trade off.
3. is there any good cataloguing software out there that people can
recommend - perhaps on the InfoMac archives - or would doing something
in FileMaker be better
4. a further consideration is that the CD remain accessible for a
reasonable time - what I mean by this is that I would like to access
the images for a reasonable amount of time (ie 5 to 10 years) with
standard equipment ie a Mac of some form that will undoubtedly be
updated - I guess I want to guard against technology creep making the
CD unusable.
5. not that I am a great user of PeeCees - but would it be possible to
make the CD cross platform.
I would welcome any suggestions or passing on personal
experiences in undertaking a similar project.
Regards
Steve

Subject: How does X-plane stack up to MS FS 98?
Dear Digest readers,
All of a sudden I discover what seems like what I have been looking for all
this time.
I have not seen a single review of X-plane, even though I subscribe to
"MacWorld" and the info-mac,
yet from the looks of their web site it looks like they have a genuine
flight simulator comparable to Microsoft. Yet recently I read an article
that links up to their web page saying Flight Simulators are making a
comback on the Mac. Is this true? The ability to fly with realistic
weather and scenary, as well as designing your own planes in a simulator on
a computer has been the strength of Microsoft's product, but unfortunately
they haven't upgraded it since version 4.0 for the Mac. Since that time,
the Windows version has been upgraded to 98. How good is X-plane's scenary,
and how realistic is its simulation? Does it cover airports around the
world with Navigational aids?
Does it have a slew-mode like Microsoft's Flight Simulator?
Are there features you can find in Microsoft and not in X-plane?
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

You're describing something familiar. I'd suspect the flyback
transformer. It's ayoke of wire windings around the narrow tail on back
end of the crt. Very high voltage. Sometimes the transformer can be
replaced, (under warrranty if you're lucky). Often the problem starts at
only a certain frequency and temperature. It might stabilize or get
worse. In either case, DO NOT OPEN UP THE MONITOR CASE. Have it repaired
or replaced.
