Caesura is a freeware utility that cuts files of type 'TEXT'
into chunks that are more manageable or more useful. I'd like to say
that it's the most useful of my utilities, but I know this is untrue.
Caesura exists to fulfill a need you will have infrequently. But when
you _do_ have that need, it will do the job quickly and cleanly,
without a lot of painful hacking away in a text editor.

I use "TypeTamer" from Impossible software. You can categorize fonts as you
describe above. However, font names in menus are not shown in their own
typeface but there is a pop-up preview feature that I actually prefer. It
has a few more features as well.

Virtual Drive is an application that can emulate multiple CD drives

Does anybody know if there's a way to do the same thing on a Mac ?

Subject: [A] Help with CD graphics
Hi, i work in a prepress bureau, so here are my reccomendations:
1. what is the best format to
scan the photos (GIF, TIFF, PICT, Photoshop) I guess this is a tradeoff
between file size and scan quality.
Either JPEG or TIFF, if absolute quality is reaquired, then TIFF, but these
tend to be big, so a JPEG with a fairly high quality factor (like, 7 or 8 in
Photoshop, say 75% in other tools) should be good enough that you can't tell
the difference.
2. what would the best scanning resolution be - again I assume that a
setting of around 100dpi would produce adequate results but it is a
trade off.
for on-screen viewing and web use 72dpi is it, if you're printing at newspaper
quality then you want about 150dpi, for offset print work then about 300dpi.
3. is there any good cataloguing software out there that people can
recommend - perhaps on the InfoMac archives - or would doing something
in FileMaker be better
hmmm. i've heard that cumulus is good, but haven't used it, and don't know
much about it... sorry =)
4. a further consideration is that the CD remain accessible for a
reasonable time - what I mean by this is that I would like to access
the images for a reasonable amount of time (ie 5 to 10 years) with
standard equipment ie a Mac of some form that will undoubtedly be
updated - I guess I want to guard against technology creep making the
CD unusable.
shouldn't be a problem. store the CD-R's out of direct sunlight, in a dark,
dry place that isn't subject to extremes of temperature and you should be
fine...
5. not that I am a great user of PeeCees - but would it be possible to
make the CD cross platform.
yeah, using toast burn files and folders (not a mac volume) and make sure it's
ISO9660 format, you can use long file names, and make sure they are turned on
in toast (Joliet or something like that rings a bell)
Hope this helps.

set i to 0
repeat n times
set i to i + 1
set myWindow to item i of myContainers
set popup of myWindow to false

Any vendor I've had to deal with has, at most, charged a small s/h fee
for replacement disks upon proof of ownership. Proof being anything from
cutting out and mailing in a page from your manual, to a photocopy of
the disk in question or (if it's not the master disk) the master disk,
to simply telling them the serial number.
I've been through _this_ bit o' fun most often with Micro$loth, when
Disk 97 of the 365 Orifrice disks goes bad...we have in the past,
purchased three copies of Office and had a disk bad in each set. not the
_same_ disk, thankfully...

I like CatFinder (probably still in InfoMac archives). Not only does
it catalog drives, but also looks into stuffed archives to list what
is inside them. It will print or save a report (with options), but I
find it more convenient to use the saved raw catalog files, which,
when opened, look like normal Mac windows in the "list" mode including
the triangles to click on to view inside folders. There is also a
search (find) feature.

I can get audio out on my new powerbook G3, but can no longer get
audio on internal speaker. The tiny microswitch inside that disconnects
internal speaker when listening through headphones must have bent. How do I
unbend it without tech support?
Please, e mail me direct and I will rebrief the list.

Does anyone know how to ensure files on your HD can not be retrieved after
you sell your machine. Possibl by completely filling it up by repeatedly
installing a large application to overwrite what files there are on the
HD? How could you do this without getting RSI of the wrist?

The first installation diskette for Excel 5.0 died on me, and I wanted to
get a replacement from MS. I was informed that they'd replace the complete
set (of something like 17 if I remember correctly) but I'd be billed for
the shipping and handling, a rather formidable price to pay. Instead of
doing so, I have managed to learn which double-dozen files sprayed where
across my hard drive have to be copied and put where in order to copy the
program using the old-fashioned sneakernet & floppy method. Of course, I,
too, would appreciate having a diskimage of Disk1, but, no, they don't do
that. (If I'm gonna pay s&h on something at this point I'd prefer a CDROM
but they don't have 5.0 available on CDROM). I don't know about FileMaker
(=Claris) since so far I haven't lost installation resources from them.

Dr. John:
Not quite. You wouldn't replace the RJ11/12 (telephone) wiring from
Phonenet to Phonenet and continue using a serial port to get your
network feed.
You would get a little $50 ethernet hub and connect the ethernet RJ45
from the wall to it. Then you would connect all the other printers and
Macs to the hub as well. Here's where you might have to spend more. If
you've got all newer model PMacs, then the 10base-T ethernet hardware
is built-in and therefore you just need to connect directly to the
hub. If you've got an older model PMac or a Quadra then you've got
some of the needed circuit in the Mac but you'll need an Ethernet
transciever to plug into the Mac which you then connect to the RJ45.
The transciever (Asant=E9 calls theirs a FriendlyNet connector)
connects to a port on the Mac called an AAUI port (I think). They're
around $40 here in Canada. (Bound to be cheaper in the States.) Older
Macs yet, like Mac II series or LCs will need a NuBus or PDS Ethernet
card installed internally that provide an RJ45 port to connect
directly to the hub. They're in the $100 range here. The alternative
we've used in the past to connect a little PDS slotted Mac like a
IIsi, SE (or any Classic shaped) or LC was to use a SCSI to Ethernet
transformer box like Asant=E9's ENSC adapter. I think they were quite
a bit more expensive and may be hard to find now.
Printers are a bit more expensive to get on the network if they don't
already have an ethernet port. Some Apple LaserWriters have AAUI
ports, some of the newest have 10Base-T (RJ45) ports but any of the
older printers that only have a DIN 8 port for a Mac serial cable or
Phonenet will need a little extra help. You can get a rather expensive
little Ethernet to Localtalk converter called something like
Etherprint or Asant=E9Print that allows an existing Localtalk
daisy-chain to be bridged to the Ethernet. These are around $400 a
pop. You can also do this using a piece of software from Apple called
Localtalk Bridge or to connect just a printer - LaserWriter Bridge.
The latter is a free control panel, the former you have to buy. These
are cheaper but the host Mac takes a performance hit anytime their Mac
has to route between the Ethertalk and Localtalk - like when a print
job gets sent to a printer they're connected to by someone else on
Ethernet.
One last thought; there was something on the market called EtherWave.
I think it acted kind of like Phonenet in as much as it was a
daisy-chain arrangement instead of needing a hub. I think they plugged
into the AAUI port so there may be a limited use for them. The second
generation of Pmacs still had AAUI ports as well as RJ45 so they could
still use these. Sorry, no idea of the costs for those.
I hope that helps.
- Scott
PS - Sorry this sounds like a long commercial for Asant=E9.

ATM Deluxe does exactly that, and does it very well. From Adobe.

I have recently purchased a CD burner and I am considering how to go
about archiving and cataloging photos.
For cataloging I like Adobe Fetch. I also have a shareware item called
"PictureAlbum Lite" but actually, I've never used it. Fetch is good. So is
FileMaker. I am sure you can make it dual-platform with Toast software.
I would think that for photos your best bet would be JPEG.
I'm sure there are experts here on the list who can offer better ideas and
more detail....

Try the shareware package QuickNailer (currently at v1.6.5), available
at the author's webpage,
http://www.amug.org/~sbaber/software/quicknailer-en-de-fr-165.hqx
According to the webpage, "Preview and organize thousands of images and
movies. Create contact sheets, media catalogs, web pages, or linked web
pages." Very well done, uses QuickTime 3.0.

Hello Info-Macers!
I'm seeking out an old Insignia Software program called SoftPC,
specifically SoftPC Professional 3.1. No, I didn't mean RealPC, I meant
_SoftPC_. This software has been discontinued for over two years. My
interest in it? My reasons are purely historical. I'm also looking to
stay legal if I can here (i.e., I do intend to pay for an actual licensed
version of the software).
Thanks in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon!

the one you need would be type tamer from http://www.impossible.com
this allows you to set custom sets and see type as is
the version I had wasnt compatible with photoshop 5 I think, or adobe type
reunion

Try either of the following Applescripts on for size. One or the other
worked most, but not all of the time for me. Popup folders, in some
circumstances, seemed to prevent all windows from closing. There is a
popup windows property, as well as a property for whether a popup window
is expanded or not. Maybe playing around with these properties will
help.
tell application "Finder"
close every window
end tell
tell application "Finder"
set x to the number of windows
repeat x times
close window 1
end repeat
end tell

Subject: The Slowest PowerCenter Ever! (Q)
Hello,
I have a power center 132 from power computing. The computer is
what I consider to be a problem child. My main problem now is that this
computer is hooked up to an ethernet. We had an Apple Laserwriter Pro 630
hooked up to it (the print is also ethernet). Okay to the point it take me
about 5 mins(and that on a page with just text). to print a document. I
have tried every thing I know to get it to print normal. When I hookup to
that computer us either appletalk or TCP/IP the connection is still
substandard. Please help me fix the problem.
