I'd suggest that everyone check per/im directory of any info-mac mirror archive at least once a week to see if an update has been made. http://www.index-site.com/imacarchives496.html has the lastest update I've seen of the info-mac mirror list. That way people will get answers out quicker. Help! Not sure about the DIP switches, Scott. My guess is that the reason you can't change any of the settings for the boxes is that they were passworded. I'd be willing to bet that you're skunked when it comes to dealing with that. The software seems to work fine with OT on my G3, by the way, so Open Transport shouldn't be an issue. Sorry I can't be of much more help than that... tom coradeschi tcora@pica.army.mil ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 15:49:43 +0100 From: "Charles Arthur, The Independent" Subject: [A] re: Aargh! Thanks for the couple of suggestions I got - one being just get a DB9 to DB25 cable; the other saying woe is you, you need a specific driver. I didn't mention that I do have Virtual PC 2.1. Now, that should be able to do the business, shouldn't it? I bought a DB9->25 cable and a double gender changer. Click click, all linked up, plugged into the printer/modem port on my Wallstreet. Run the MP3 installation CD, which says the MP3 player should be attached to LPT1. Hmm. VPC offers me COM1, COM2, but no LPT1. After much messing with the settings on Windows 98 (following which the MP3 program refused to see anything much, and kept getting binned by W98 for having "performed an illegal operation" - now *that's* something I'm glad not to see on Macs), I eventually decided that it would not happen. Moral of the story apparently being, if you ain't got a specific way to make your DB25 kit be seen through the printer/modem port, you're stuffed. I've had similar fun waiting for Iomega to release Mac versions of its Clik! PC card drivers. Sometimes I feel like a second-class citizen using a Mac. Then I see the virus reports and use Virtual PC, and feel much better. Now. I use a 3Com 56K and all I needed was to get an updated ARA/OT PPP script. Have you verified the card is functioning in another machine? It happens when you have the screen at, say 832x624, and Launcher works fine, then you close the launcher and change to 640x480. Then when you try to open launcher, the window it tries to draw is bigger than the screen size. Try changing the screen resolution to a higher value and see if it helps. Then if it does, resize the launcher window so it will work in your smaller size. Virzi" Subject: Mediaone home LAN Qs I have a Mediaone cable modem (New England region). Right now it is only connected to one of my Macs, but I want to create a home LAN to share the wealth among 2 - 3 machines. Mediaone doesn't support home LANs, but they do allow them. So, here are my questions: 1. Has anyone used the Macsense product X-Router? This looks like a good way to wire up a bunch of machines. I think it will work with M1 because the router provides a MAC address, which M1 requires. Anyone tried this yet? 2. What I'd really like is a wireless connection (1, maybe 2). I haven't been able to find a wireless ethernet card for Macs. Does anyone have any experience with home wireless LANs they could share? TIA. - Bob Virzi -------------------------------------------------------------- The box said, "Windows'95 or better required," so I bought a Mac. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 08:39:55 -0700 From: Chris Schram Subject: MFS Format On Sun, 19 Sep 1999, "Jean-Philippe Pellet" wrote: >Hello, > >I wanted to run a lot of old apps I have on my new PowerBook G3, but as you >may guess many of them won't even open because they're too old. Or a special program to convert my floppies? I know of no software that can make an OS 8.x Mac read MFS formatted disks. I'd be happy to be proven wrong. I believe your only option is to find someone who has a Mac that can run System 7.x or lower. As I recall, System 7.x can read MFS format, but can't write or format. System 6.0.x or lower can read, write & format. One hitch: The newer versions of Disk Copy require System 7.x or higher. Good Luck.
