It allows to fit multinomial models of arbitrary size to frequency data using the "General Processing Tree" algorithm developed by Hu and Batchelder (1994). AppleTree can read model files and data files written for the MS-DOS "MBT" program developed by Xiangen Hu, University of Memphis, Tennessee. AppleTree provides estimates for the free parameters together with confidence intervals, it allows for checking the identifiability of a model, and it provides tree graphs for the model descriptions. AppleTree is freeware. It runs natively on both 680x0 and PowerPC Macs. See for latest informations. Changes since version 1.1: * Improved error detection in model files * When double clicked in the Finder, AppleTree text files are automatically entered as model files if the extenstion is ".eqn" and as data files if the extension is ".mdt". * Upon opening a text file in AppleTree, the program now checks, whether there is already a window for this file. * Minor cosmetic corrections * Fixes a bug introduced in version 1.1.0: The estimation process did not work correctly if lambda was set to 1. Requirements * MacOS 7.5 or later * Motorola 68020 or better (no FPU required) or any PowerPC. PowerPC recommended. System requirements: MacOS 8, AppleScript. Cool Features * You can configure the script to be active only during certain hours, and you can include or exclude weekends. This is useful is you use energy saving software to spin down your hard drive. * The script, as shipped, waits 15 minutes before setting a new picture. It uses an idle handler, as opposed to an increment loop or other similar method, so it should have minimal impact on CPU usage. * The script remembers the last eight pictures set, and tries to avoid reusing recently set pictures. * You can set a new folder of pictures by dragging it onto the script. * It should gracefully handle having the picture folder disappear during a run. * To maximize performance, the script leaves the Desktop Pictures control panel active, but will hide it after setting the picture. Major changes since 1.0: Added ability to run only between certain hours (useful with drive spindown software). Picture history now tracked by name instead of index. Fixed miscellaneous timeout problems. Picture history now remembered across invocations. Improved checking of items in the picture folder (for example, aliases are checked for validity). Well, I actually got the idea from Windows. I noticed that the menu I got when I right-clicked on the background of a folder window had a "New" submenu with various document types, and I found myself wishing I had that on my Mac. Well, hey, I'm a programmer! NewCM is a contextual menu plugin that makes it easy to make new documents in a specific location. After configuring it by putting commonly used file types in a "NewCM Items" folder, you can control-click in a Finder folder window and select one of those types from a submenu. NewCM then creates the file and opens it. There is also a "NewCM Applications" folder, which you can use to specify alternate applications for opening the new files. You can even use this feature to run scripts! Version 1.2.1J: - The naming dialog now complains if you try to use a name that's already taken - Much better error reporting: instead of just the error code, it tells you what it was trying to do, and what the most common error codes mean. - Added the NewCM Applications folder. - Both folders can now be aliases. - New files have their creation date set to now, rather than keeping the template file's date. - Sort strings (i.e. when the third character is ')' ) don't show up in the name dialog. - At startup time, NewCM creates its folders if they're not present. - Big internal changes Christopher Li Bridge 1 Software English/Japanese Japanese/English Software Localization and Management mailto:ChrisLi@bridge1.com [Archived as /info-mac/gui/new-cm-121-jp.hqx; 172K] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 07:43:30 -0700 From: shawn@eureka.ca Subject: [*] Newton's Aquarium 1.0 Demo 68K: A Solar System Constructio Kingston, Ontario, 3-Mar-1998--Eureka Software Inc. Features: * Interactive real time n-body simulation * Display of velocity, acceleration and force vectors * Centre of mass and conservation of momentum * Variable G and distance exponent * Real units (mks) * Cut, copy & paste, export to picture file and print * Toolbars * Number of universe documents limited only by memory * Sample universes and stationery pads included * Complete balloon help for all menu and dialog items Requirements * Mac OS 7.0 (or later) * 4 megs free memory preferred (2 megs minimum) * 68040 or PowerPC strongly suggested During the last few months of development, physics teachers from across North America, Europe and Australia were invited to test and review Newton's Aquarium. Tom Barta, Contributing Editor for MacNow Maganize, had this to say "The interface was elegant and intuitive, and all the features I tried worked. Actually, I loved it. It will make Newton's laws real for people." Tom also holds a Ph. D. in organic chemistry. Pricing for Newton's Aquarium starts at US$100 for a single school copy and US$20 for subsequent copies. School site licences are available for US$400 and larger licensing can be negotiated. A student edition is also available for US$28. A free feature-reduced demo can be downloaded from Eureka's web site (www.eureka.ca) for evaluation. Eureka was established in 1994 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to create interactive software products that help students visualize and understand abstract scientific concepts. Eureka's products are now used in more than a dozen countries world-wide. Luckily the rest of my software is backed > up. This is normal, and to be expected (and not any secret, Norton has publicly stated this problem in the past). Norton works at a very low level - when Apple changed the disk format it's to be expected that utilities that work at a low level on the old disk format will not work with the new one. Norton updated to 3.5.3 to address this problem (it won't fix HFS+, but it won't hurt it, either), and plans (so far as I know) to release a HFS+ compatible version in the future. HFS+ went through several evolutions and changes during the beta stages of MacOS 8.1, so it was manufacturers basically had to wait before 8.1 was finalized before even _starting_ on development for HFS+ compatible utilities. > Norton 3.2.1 is not recommended by this same technician for any MacOS > versions after 7.5.5. Again, because Norton works at a very low level the probability that it won't work (without an update) correctly after you upgrade your system software is fairly high. I've used Norton for years, and still use (the latest version) on MacOS 8.1 (without HFS+) without a problem. In fact, one of the reasons that I haven't upgraded to HFS+ for the moment is that there is no utility (like Norton) that will reliably fix problems that may occur. Basically, it's always a good idea to confirm whether or not utilities (like Norton) that work on a low level work with a new system upgrade before actually trying them. Even though it is supposed to default to whatever Ethernet interface the Mac is set to (in TCP/IP), it doesn't. I know SW95 is seeing something to do with the card, because if I modify the resource to reflect the slot the card *isn't* in, I get an error saying something to the effect 'There is a problem with your network interface (0000), check Network Troubleshooter...'. This doesn't happen when I modify the resource to reflect the correct slot, it just doesn't connect to the network. Any help would be appreciated. I've apparently used up all of my tech support with a call (to explain their excessively vauge upgrade procedure of which disk to connect to the 'D' drive) which required about 30s of their time. First, just a reminder that there are other simple text utilities. I love TexEdit and BBEdit Lite, and there are lots of others, all of which are not limited to the 32K of text, or whatever it is for SimpleText. There are also lots of little "text-cleaning" utilities. I have had good luck with one called "add-strip 3.4.1". I believe that BBEdit Lite itself even cleans text, though I've never used it that way. Another one is Text Cleaner PPC. Maybe those will help. Daly ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 22:45:52 EST From: Luskin Subject: getting rid of files full text I have submitted this before, but without full explanation. I am using a Mac IIvx with the 7.5 operating system, and the Norton Utilities, version 3.2.1. (This version of Norton may not be current for the 7.5 operating system, but it seems to do everything I want, with one glaring exception.) I have gotten rid of all Norton routines that deal with file recovery, to my knowledge. I have a number of sensitive business files on the Mac IIvx, which I do NOT want to share with people who will now have access to the old Mac IIvx. When I trash them, and delete the trash, they seem to go away. But using Norton unerase allows me to recover them. When I try to open them, I get -50 errors, among other things. I suspect that the files are well and truly destroyed, but I am disturbed that the titles still exist. What if there is in fact residual data, and someone gets lucky with a new utility? And I do NOT want people recovering the file titles. When I use the Norton utility, wipe, the files are still recoverable by Norton unerase. When I use the utility, burn, the same thing happens. Burn theoretically gets rid of the file, and overwrites the space it occupied by a pattern, but it bothers me that the titles still exist, and they files take the correct original amount of space after they are unereased. So burn does not work either. So burn is no better than wipe. I have tried the following: I created a new folder, and moved one of the offending files, call it "A", into it. Then, in the old folder, I changed the name of a file, call it "B", to "A", and moved it into the new folder. I was asked if I wished to replace the old by the new, and did so. I repeated this, until I was rid of ALL the files, except the original A. And then did a wipe. And all the files came back. I have had this machine for many years, and have deleted thousands of files. How come only this collection of sixty or so is undestroyable? I did getinfos on them, and none are locked. Why doesn't the disk directory fill up with the titles of old deleted files? Most important, what can I do to get rid of all trace of them, once and for all. I have tried to do desktop rebuilds before attempting the unerase, but that does no good. The option of reformatting the disk is not acceptable either. First, how do I know that file recovery cannot take place after that? I am pretty sure not. But, secondly, there is a lot of software and stuff set up just right, and it would take a considerable amount of time to recreate the Mac II environment. Along the same lines, how do I get rid of old file aliases? Every now and then I deleted a file before I deleted its aliases, and now these aliases seem immortal. How do I kill the aliases. I downloaded a utility, aliasboss, but it does not work. It seems to me that there ought to be some way of killing off files once and for all. It is also possible that I am doing something that prevents these files from being destroyed just like all the thousands that are now gone forever. Thank you for the help. Michael B.
