Talk about a long winded reply...
1. Download TexEdit from Info-Mac
2. Drag the saved text onto the TexEdit icon.
3. From the special menu select "Modify Document"
4. select remove CR&LF
You are done.
Also works with e-mail documents

Robert,
I've got an LWS 360 and I'm almost positive (although it's at home and I
can't check) it's got a parallel port on it. Maybe that will help if your
laptop has a parallel port on it and printing's all you're really
interested in? As far as connecting it to your mac, I can't really help
you, although there are some AppleTalk for PC packages that would probably
do the trick.

Subject: Epson 1520
I have been using an Epson SC800 for sometime. Its slow and the driver is
cranky, but the output can be gorgeous and since I'm not trying to make
money with the machine, its slowness is a fair trade-off given its price.
I would like to work in the next-larger format. The proportions of 8x10
have always seemed less felicitous to me than 5x7 or 11x14. (As you can
see, I am trying to recapture the joys of those halcyon days when I had a
darkroom available)
So my question is essentially does the 1520 share the virtues and vices of
the 800. I think I have read about banding problems on the 1520. I would
appreciate it if anybody with experience with the 1520 could give me a
recommendation and also I'd like to know where to buy 11x14 or 11x17 or
whatever paper.

Subject: Follow-up to 'Terminal Emulation SW'
First, a great many thanks to those who replied to my initial
inquiry regarding terminal emulation software. In brief, I need terminal
software to allow my mother full access to the Board of Realtor's BBS
(full access being the ability to print to a local printer from the
emulator, and the use of proper function keys instead of having to guess
at control-key combos).
It would seem from many of the replies that I left out some critical
info, mainly the connection type and the terminal I need to emulate
(duh!). FYI, it's a standard dial-up connection (serial) direct to the
BBS. They state the default terminal type is a Televideo TVI950. Never
heard of it myself, but I'm hoping someone knows of an appropriate
solution. FWIF, the whole idea here is to find a solution cheaper than
the $200 package the Board offers. TIA, and I'll be sure to post a
summary if and when I find a solution.

Hi Robert,
I setup networks for schools on the east coast of Australia. The majority
of schools are in a similar situation as yours, ie. they don't have a
great deal of money to spend.
A recent school that I just completed consisted of approx. 70 Macs (PPC's
and 68K's). This had a thin coax backbone with the majority of clients
connecting via ethernet but approx 20 could only connect via localtalk
cabling (mainly due to the cost factor involved)
The Solution.
For internet Access we had to resort to an NT box (doh:( ) running
Netscape Proxy Server, this is connected to a ISP via 2 33.6K modems (We
will upgrade to 56K when our ISP supports it). When a client machine
requests a web page it checks the local proxy server (the NT box) if the
page isn't there it gets it from the ISP's Proxy server, from there this
is returned to the clients machine. This entire process is virtually
transparent to the users. Using a proxy server helps speeds things up
allot and reduces congestion. They are fortunate enough to have a
separate mail server /internal web server (I can tell you more on how we
provide every student with their own email address later if you like).
Using this method the students can use the browser of their choice
(explorer or navigator).
There have only been one or two complaints on speed, but these only occur
at the start of lunch time or when ever students have free access to the
computers. Often their are 30 - 40 machines browsing the web at once.
I have found that allot of the kids visit the same pages time and time
again, especially when told to visit a certain page in a class. Also we
use VICOM's Internet gateway (www.vicomtech.com) for staff who need to
access external email accounts etc...
If you would like more details on setting this up, email me and I can
send you the detailed info.
Cheers,
Chris Moffatt
PS. Does any one know of a Proxy server for the Mac?

Subject: Internal CD-ROM audio cable plug type?
Just installed a Yamaha CDR400AT CD-RW drive into my PowerMac 9500
(replacing the old read-only CD drive). The problem is Yamaha built the
CDR400 with a 'Molex' plug connector surrounding the 4 male pins for
audio out (this is apparently a PC-standard type plog). The Mac's
internal 4-pin ribbon cable which is meant to plug into the audio out
port on the CD drive has a different type of plastic plug. The plug is
larger than the narrow 'molex' connector on the drive, so it does not
fit.
Can anyone identify the name/type of plug Apple uses on the internal
audio CD connection cable? Maybe with this info I can somehow find an
adapter plug or cable. Anyone know where I might find such a plug or
cable? (The cable would have to be female molex on one end- to attach to
the 4 male pins on the CD- and male *whatever* on the other end to match
up with Apple's internal audio plug).
Thanks!

Ummm.... hmmm. There is already a Macintosh shareware program named
Menuette that is unrelated to this one. It has been distributed since
1992 (and there's a new version due in the next few months).
I'm the author of that other program, and I even have a registered

I have sent mail to the author of this new program asking that he change
the name to avoid confusion, but I just wanted to publicly point out the
problem now to attempt to stem the inevitable flow of people who will ask
me about it.

Yep. Upgrade to Netscape 4.0.4.1; it's much more stable. As to the Java,
though, I'm not so sure...I think Netscape uses their own Java instead of
Apple's, and I think it's still problematic in 4.0.4.1. I'd be interested

Subject: Pentium II vs PowerMac G3 : true tests
Hi, Everybody,
For last 8 years, i¹m trying to bench computers using Photoshop.
Here is my last high-end test: Pentium II vs PowerMAC G3 (PPC750) :
To Perform This test (you can try it on your own machine) i take the
sample Picture ³Mallorca² provided with Photoshop (in Samples folder).
I resize it to obtain an 3072 x 2048 pixel image = 18.0 MByte, and i saved
it in JPEG Format (maximum, 8), now i have my reference picture.
On my left i have an PowerMacintosh G3/266, with MacOS 8.1 , no extra
inits, 6Gb IDE Hard Disk, 128 MB of Ram, original integrated video,
dispay in 832*624 in 24 bits, this machine is powered by an PowerPC 750
(G3) at 266 Mhz with 512 k of backside cache running at 133 Mhz, 66 Mhz
Motherboard Bus, and of course Adobe PhotoShop 4.01 with 100 MB of
allocated memory.
On My right an Compaq Professional Workstation 6000, under Windows NT 4
pack 3, no extra process; all Power goes to PhotoShop, 4Gb Hard Disk, 128
MB Ram, an Matrox Millenium II video card, display in 1024*768 in 24 bits,
this machine is powered by an Pentium II running at 266 Mhz, with 512 Ko
of secondary cache, and of course Adobe PhotoShop 4.01 with 80 % of
allocated memory.
Now the tests, for last years i using the same tests, the resize &
rotation; represents intensive use of memory, Speed of bus, cache etc..
The filters tests (like polar coordinates) representing the ability of
processor to perform integer computing (no one of theses tests use
floating point). An important thing, check if in general preference of
Photoshop the pop-up menu is set to Bicubic.
Another important thing is that all computers that i have tested, have
always enought RamMemory (100MB), for doNot perform Swaping, so my tests
represents only the power of CPU, L2 cache,Motherboard and Ram, and do not
represents disk or SCSI controler performance, bye same way my tests does
no represents vidéo card perfomance, because my timmings does not includes
the display refresh .
All theses tests are perfomed many times, and checked after system re-boot
and photoshop reload. After each test you can or re-load the reference
Picture or cancel the last test.
All results are in seconds:

Dear Digest readers,
Under OS 8, Simcity 2000 version 1.1 (yes I know 1.2 is available, but it
lacks a certain easter egg I like to use) will crash if you pan through the
map using the scrollbars. However, I found if you simply use the arrow

Subject: sound-no sound
I can't seem to figure out why my monitors/sound control panel shuts off
the system sound with every restart. Anyone have any ideas?
TIA

PS: for those who care, Decision One, the people who are doing hardware
support for the Power Computing machines, is OUTSTANDING. They are
responsive and helpful. I needed a repair and it was done within 5 days.
It needed a second repair (of the first problem) and I had it back
within 3, that's THREE, business days from the time they got it.

Subject: Upgrade path from 7.5?
I have looked at the Apple Upgrade site, trying to find out how to get from
7.5 to 7.5.1 to... I got the patches to get to 7.5.1, but the site doesn't
seem to have the patches to proceed further, and I recall they were there a
year or so ago. Would anyone know where the upgrade patches to 7.5.3 and
7.5.5 are loc ated.
For my Mac IIvx, is it possible to patch up to 7.6.1? If so where are the
update patches?
Thank you in advance.
