This actually doesn't sound too bad. If you can boot from a floppy, run
Disk First Aid from the floppy on the internal drives. Also might want to
try using Hard Drive Setup to reinstall/update the disk drivers.
It is possible that your system is corrupted, after completing step 1
above, you may need to reinstall your system. If you have a good backup
copy of the system, you can copy the System & Finder from that and be done
with it.
Good Luck.

Subject: 7200 upgrade
I've seen a lot of the types of questions lately, and I've been paying a
lot of attention to them. That's because I own a 7200/90 and on Monday, I
will be upgrading (hopefully) to a 7600 Logic Board. I've seen a few
sources for upgrades.
ICNI (www.icni.com)
Pre-Owned Electronics (was www.preowned.com)
Shreve Systems (www.shrevesystems.com)
Most places I've looked into have a net upgrade cost of about $600 (+ or
- $60)
I ended up going with Preowned Electronics. (1-800-427-5343). They're in
Bedford, Mass.
I called them and ordered the 7600, and was billed about $1300. At the
same time, they sent a purchase order saying that they'll buy my 7200/90
logic board for about $700. The board they're sending me comes with a 180
day warranty (twice as long as the warranty on Apple refurbished
equipment)
I've never done anything this drastic to any computer (PC or Mac), but I
have added memory, hard drives, cache, Network cards to other computers,
so I think I can handle this.

I use the shareware "Alpha" text editor by Peter Keleher. (Information is
available at the Alpha home page at
http://www.cs.umd.edu/~keleher/alpha.html.) Alpha has a "remove prefix"
command. I paste the selection into an Alpha document, select it, choose
the "remove prefix" command from a menu, and then paste it back into my
mailer document. Since I have Alpha open almost all the time anyway, it's
as convenient, or even moreso, as using a separate utility.

Subject: [Q] Audio baffed on 7600/132
Dear Friendly Helpful Macintosh Community -
I've really done it this time! Yesterday while doing routine stuff, I
think I was changing a Decor setting, there was a brief staticy sound, and
the monitor went black. Tech Tool was open at the time but I had not
performed any tests or anything, it was just open. I immediately rebooted,
but from then on my AUDIO has been distorted and unuseable. The monitor is
fine. I noticed no particular static problems at the time, but the machine
had been running all day so some build-up was possible, I suppose.
I have a 7600/132 with small powered speakers connected to the mini-plug,
and the AV RCA connectors going to a mixer and into my stereo. This setup
has served me perfectly for over a year, until now.
Today, after a couple of reboots, the small Apple speakers are sounding
normal again, but the AV output is still baffed. Sounds like the wrong
impedence or something, but how could that be? I have zapped the PRAM,
didn't help. Is this a hardware problem for sure?
Am I looking at a new logic board, or is audio on a separate card? The
logic board was replaced for something unrelated (unnecessarily, as it
turns out) while it was still under warranty. Will the Apple warranty on
the replaced logic board extend for a full year from it's being installed,
or is that asking too much?
Any and all suggestions gratefully received.

If you use Eudora there is a wonderful solution, a shareware item called
Quote/Space/Tab. It is a PlugIn for Eudora. Another Eudora plugin is called
Add/Strip Quotes. They are both accessed through Eudora's Edit menu under
the "Message PlugIns" item.
If you do not use Eudora, there is a shareware program called "Add/Strip"
which I think is currently at version 3.4.1. You can get that one at
http://www.shareware.com. I haven't studied it as carefully as I should,
but on first glance it is not as intuitive to use as I would like, though
it appears that it would certainly do the job.
The Eudora PlugIns site that I am aware of is at
http://www.ka.net/eudora/mac/plugin.html
Hope that helps.

Several pieces of software will be needed.
1. IRC: ircle 3.0b10 {what I use}, or MacIRC, or ShadowIRC.
2. Instant messages: ICQ {what I use most}, eXcite PAL, ichat pager,
PeopleLink {I have all 4}, or AOL Instant Messenger {I think that you don't
need AOL to use this}. Note ICQ seems to be the most popular with the
Windows crowd and AOL Instant Messenger second I think.
3. Know when Friends are online: Use Finger or one of the apps from #2.
4. Get into chat rooms: IRC has channels {they are much like chat rooms on
AOL}, they are on many different IRC servers. If you get ircle 3.0b10 for
example it comes with a long list of IRC servers and you can easily add
more one at a time or import as a batch and replace the entire built in
list. Also there are JAVA chat rooms on some web sites, for these you need
a JAVA capable browser.
Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.

Works for me with Eudora. However if you use some other mailers, they may
do weird stuff (CommuniGator does, for instance). The problem can be
rectified in a text editor by replacing each occurrences of "Date:" with a
line of hyphens (copied from the digest so you get the correct number of
them) followed by a carriage return and "Date:"
The problem is that Easy View requires the line of hyphens to delimit each
article, but some mailers strip it out as a part of their MIME handling.

Ooh, that's more difficult than you might imagine. I tried messing with
that stuff to make other digests (MacSystm, MacHrdwr, MacAppli, MacNet,
etc.) display the name of the sender, but I couldn't get it right and
repeated attempts over 6 months to reach author Akif Eyler were
unsuccessful.
I think Adam Engst (TidBits author) has some connection to 'setext' format
and Easy View, but I'm not clear exactly what. I also recall that there
was some ancient and rudimentary 'documentation' on setext format on the
tidbits web or ftp sites.
If you do figure it out or find the author, please let me know! Cheers,

We have that message sometimes on our home ethernet connecting 3 Macs, 2
printers and a cable modem using a hub. Sometimes it is solved by shutting
down all the equipment and resetting the cable modem. Sometimes it requires
zapping the PRAM. One time I threw out everything to do with Open
Transport, including AppleTalk, and reinstalling from the System CD. That
included throwing out Preferences as well, and using File Buddy to view the
files on the hard drive, then using it to make the Desktop file and Desktop
Database as well as the Appleshare PDS visible, then throwing those three
things away and restarting. After the rebuild of the desktop, resetting the
AppleTalk control panel and Open Transport settings gave us a working
setup.
Perhaps somewhere in that list of actions will be your own solution. One
brief thought: are there dip switches on the printer that need to be set?
And are you using the correct driver for the printer?

I've just started to get reacquainted with Pagemaker 6.5
after being away since 4.0. I installed it with the
intention of a quick re-introduction and getting on with
some work.
But right now I can't move objects (text or graphics) using
the click-and-drag method! Anytime I go to drag an object,
the object disappears and reappears on the upper left corner
of the pasteboard! I can still use the control palette.
But that's a very inefficient way to do creative work.
Searching the manuals turned up no clue, searching Adobe's
site turned up zilch, even searching discussion groups has
gotten me nowhere. I've even tried a clean install with
nothing but the basic extensions, still same problem. Talk
about frustration!
As my last resort I figured I'd give Info-Mac a shot. Back
in college Info-Mac was a great resource. I know its
probably something simple, but the simplest things are not
so obvious sometimes.
If anyone has any hints please let me know or suggestions

... looking up "lost" serial numbers on registered prods?
Here's the situation:
1. I paid the shareware fee on Stuffit Lite, installed it once, registered
it in the app, and lost the envelope the update version disk came in, thus
making it impossible to register even older copies with the sam enumber.
2. I bought SpringCleaning as a discount-bee from Mac Warehouse ( I think my
"real" purchase that time was PhotoDeluxe 1.0). As is their wont, MW puts
Aladdin's vital info sticky on a flimsy plastic bag, into which is sealed
the installer disk and warranty info/reg card. Well, I lent the installer
disk and the flimsy bag to my dad, who has taken it everywhere he's gone
with his Mac (3 residences in the last year alone). Got the disk back, but
as we all know the installer requires one to enter a serial or reg# to
proceed. My dad lost that bag.
Were this not a weekend, I'd call them (Aladdin) directly. I had the same
thing happen _with the PD1.0, and after only a 20min wait, Adobe Cust.
Service was able to give the original reg # over the phone. I know these two
Stuffit apps _are registered, I just need to get the #s somehow.

Sure! Try ProcessWatcher 3.0, sharware, probably available on Info-Mac.
But there's something else actually called Quitter or something like that
(icon resembles a stop sign). Also works across a network, if you have
copies running on each machine; i.e., you can quit stuff on other machines

Subject: The future of Rhapsody?
OK, this message is slightly off topic, but I was curious...
Apple has done a lot of wavering on what Rhapsody will be and who it
will be used by recently. From what I understand, they aim to limit it
to a sort of network OS, leaving the average user with MacOS; in the
same way that Microsoft spawned their Windows NT and left home users
with Windows 95.
I personally am excited as heck about Rhapsody. Everything I've seen so
far indicates that it will have most of the advantages of a UNIX type
file system, but the MacOS feel on top of it; neat! True multitasking,
multiple hardware compatibility (the version for Pentium machines), and
a gazilion other cool things.
So, the question is, is the mac community so entrenched in the current
OS that they wouldn't jump on the chance for these improvements? Or is
apple just out of touch? Would you people be willing to switch? And if
so, is there any way we can get Apple to make Rhapsody the standard for
all Macs instead of just a select market?
I'm afraid that Rhapsody might be Apple's last big chance to grab a
larger market share, but by limiting it to fewer users, they might miss
out.
Well, that's my 2 cents. Thanks for the indulgence.
