File - Properties

Properties .. The File menu Properties option
allows the user to view and modify the properties
of a file. Invoking the File menu Properties
option opens a dialog box. The dialog box
indicates the UNIX file properties. The dialog
box indicates the path to the selected file(s).
An icon indicates the type of file selected. The
size of the file and links that exist are shown on
the dialog box. If the file is a link, a field
displays the path to the linked file. The owner
of the file and the group to which the file
belongs are displayed in scrolled lists. Only the
superuser can change the owner and the group
associated to a file. The access history of the
file is displayed, including the last access, the
last modification and the last status change. The
access history includes the time and date of
          access.

The dialog box includes a table of permissions.
Toggle buttons next to each category of
permissions allow the user to determine the
accessibility of the file. If the user is the
owner of the file or the superuser, this dialog
box permits the user to modify the table of
          permissions.

UNIX permits different levels of accessibility for
the owner, the group to which the owner belongs
and for others with access to the file. If the
user is the superuser or the owner of the file,
the user can modify these permissions. Otherwise
the dialog box displays the status of the file,
but the user cannot modify these settings.

The user may select multiple files for review and
status change. A toggle - Apply to All Selected,
permits the user to change all selected files
simultaneously. If the --Apply to All Selected --
button is on, pushing the Apply button changes the
file properties of all the selected files.
Multiple files can be changed individually and
given different combinations of permissions. The
next and previous buttons allow the user to move
ahead and backward through the group of selected
files. The user must select the Apply button,
after changing each file's permissions, to confirm
the changes. Closing the dialog box or selecting
the next or previous file without selecting Apply
cancels the changes. The dismiss button closes
the Properties dialog box. Any changes that have
not been applied will be canceled when the dialog
          box is dismissed. Alt+Shift+(r) or Meta+(f), (r)
          opens the Properties dialog box.

When there is only one file selected and it is a
directory, a toggle - descend through directories
is available. Selecting this toggle causes the
file manager to descend into this directory and
its sub directories and change the file
permissions of each file and directory
encountered. Toggle buttons next to the owner
list and the group list allow the superuser to
change owners and groups using the same idea.
