Welcome to Whisper ! -- Internet Phone

Whisper is an internet phone. You can use it
together with a soundcard and a headset (or Microphon + Speakers)
to talk to other people on the Internet.

To install the program see 'INSTALL'

This version is halfduplex, so only one person can speak at a time.
Pressing any key leaves the control to the other party.

Pressing 'q' stops the dialog and quits.

gsm compression is used, so the programm should be suitable for
low bandwidth networks (at least 19.200 bps)

You need a mixer (e.g. xfmix) to adjust volume and gain.

Usage is very simple and similar to 'talk':

Type 'whisper user@host' at the commandline and wait for your party
to respond. If so, after a few seconds 'talk...' will appear.
Pressing a key leaves the control to 'user@host' except you pressed 'q'.

To allow whisperd to display a message on your terminal enable
write access: 'mesg y'

If you are called, (and mesg is 'y') a message will appear on the screen. like

	   #########################################
	   # #
	   # Message from whisper #
	   # #
	   #########################################

Simply type 'whisper' to accept the connection

Whisper accepts an option '-b num'. On fast networks (like ethernet)
a value '-b 1' is appropriate. On slow networks choose a higher value,
the default is '-b 8'. A higher number leads to a larger delay time,
-- approximately 'num' times 0.5 seconds -- but results in a more robust
conversation.

Please, this is no X-application, but at least on the server side
X must be running! (That's a bug, no feature)

If you find (other) bugs, compile the package for other platforms than
x86 or have suggestions for improvements, mail me at
